Four Levels of Interpretation

  1. Literal Comprehension

Elaine H. Kin wrote this article “Then and Now: Finding My Voice” she is a Korean-American writer. She wants to be told her fortune. 1. Interpretation

The writer tries to show that she experienced the bitter experience when she was in America. The fortune teller told her one thing but happened another thing. She had faced lots of problems. She observed the Korean war in which many people lost their houses and lives. She didn’t get love and affection from American people as much as she expected. Due to small eyes she was teased by American boys. Similarly, she saw blacks were ill-treated by the whites. In this way the writer tires to show racial discrimination in America, life of Korean people and her belief in fortune telling.

  1. Critical Thinking

This is an autobiographical note of the writer. She has written what she observed in America and Korea. The language is very simple.

  1. Assimilation

When I finished reading this text, I remembered my college life. When the result B.A. first year was out, I went to the PCO but there wasn’t the telephone line. I became excited to know my result. Finally, I went to the fortune- teller. I asked him whether I could pass the exam or not. But the fortune-teller told me that you have failed the exam. Then I felt sad and returned home. Next day when there was telephone line. I was informed second division. I felt happy and I cursed the fortune teller.
