Summary

The captain Randall Ethan Home went on a sea voyage on the 8th of May. The name of the ship was the Rita Anne. The captain was with crews. It was a fine day. He had also other friends with him. On the 5th of June, they reached at an island but this island was not in their map. The captain wanted to eat some fruit there. They found a big rock there and brought on their ship. From that day, their days went wrong. All the crew members were attracted by that rock. One side of that rock used to shine. They couldn’t entertain themselves anymore by musics, stories or jokes.

On the 14th of June, all crew members appeared in the form of apes. The crew members didn’t understand whatever the captain told them. But the captain was still hopeful. As he played the violin and read to the crew members, everyone came to normal condition. They covered that big stone forever. The captain decided to set fire in the ship and let the ship sink. They were rescued by the another sip and were left in the harbor- Santa Pnago. But they didn’t tell anyone what happened to them.

Four Levels of Interpretation

  1. Literal Comprehension:

This story was written by Chris Van Allsburg. It is and allegorical. In this story the ship indicates the earth and wretched stone indicates TV se. 1. Interpretation:

The writer tries to show the bad effects of TV on the earth. He says that wretched stone that they brought on their ship means after the invention of TV, Children as well as adults have spoiled their creativity. They have left reading books, singing songs and enjoying playing with natural things. TV has become curse for human beings as in the story the skillful crew members started to watch the TV instead of doing their own duty. Here wretched stone or TV spoiled them. When they left it, they became fresh and started doing their work.

  1. Critical Thinking:

This story presents disadvantages of watching TV. Human beings are spending their valuable time in front of TV. It destroys creativity of human beings. But the writer only presents disadvantages. Why doesn’t he speaks about advantages. It is also difficult to believe how a person can become an ape? There are symbols in the text wretched stone symbolizes televisions set.

  1. Assimilation:

After reading this allegorical story, I knew that TV is really curse for human beings. It has rusted our mind. Small children as well as adults who can do something are wasting their valuable time watching TV. They waste their time in place of reading books and doing their work. They even leave eating food when there is a new programme on TV. It has diverted our mind from creativity. I became alert about disadvantages of TV in our life. We must cover it with a cloth and keep in the corner. We should only watch TV when there is an important thing on TV. Otherwise it can spoil our future.

Possible Questions:
