Whenever I tell about spring, or any delights which I experience, or the pleasant country, I think of a conversation I had with a friend in the city shortly before I left. “I trust” he said with an ugly leer “that you will spare the reading public your little adventures in contentment.” (Spring [April 1941]”)

b. As I looked at the dead moth, this minute wayside triumph of so great a force over so mean an antagonist filled me with wonder. Just as life had been strange a few minutes before, so death was now a strange. The moth having sighted himself now lay most decently and uncomplainingly composed. Oh yes, he seemed to say, death is stronger that I am. (“The Death of the Moth”)

To come all the way, rifle in hand, with two thousand people marching at my heals, and then to trail feebly away, having done nothing – no, that was impossible. The crowd would laugh at me. And my whole life, every white man’s life in the East, was one long struggle not to be laughed at. (“Shooting an Elephant”)

Leo ran forward with flowers outthrust. Around the corner, Salzman, leaning against a wall, chanted prayers for the dead. (“The Magic Barrel”)

b. God, in his opinion, and made woman only to tempt man and test him. Thus man should approach her with great care, ever fearful of trap. She was, in fact, even shaped like a trap, with her arms extended and her lips parted for a man. (“Moonlight”)

c. She was dark and thin and foreign looking in a world where the prestige went to blondeness and curly hair and dimples, she was slow where glibness was prized. She was a child of anxious, not proud, love. We were poor and could not afford for her the soil of easy growth. (“I Stand Here Ironing”)

5. How could the photograph of a girl named Stella arouse intense love in the heart of Leo Finkle? How does he realise that love to human beings leads to love to God. Give arguments based on the story (“The Magic Barrel”).
