2. Read the passage and do the tasks that follow. 10
At nine years old Suresh was troublesome at school. His parents were well
off, but they lived separately. His father had married another woman and
left Suresh’s mother. Suresh was in the habit of pushing children for no
apparent reason, and once he scratched a girl’s leg with a pencil and it bled.
Suresh was also a problem at home. There was a close connection between
his home circumstances and his behavior at school. He lived with his
mother and a younger brother with whom he quarreled all the time. His
mother seemed to prefer his brother, who was much better behaved at
home and much more successful at school than Suresh. Suresh made his
mother angry. She tried not to favor her younger son, but she was aware
that it seemed as if she did.
It seemed very obvious that Suresh’s attack on other children at school
was connected with his jealousy of his younger brother. He attacked his
brother at home, just as he attacked other children at school. His attacks
on his brother were, of course, linked to his feeling of being unwanted and
unloved at home. They also ensured that his mother took notice of him.
Similarly, his attacks on other children at school gained the teacher’s
attention. Once he had the teacher’s attention, e.g. When she talked to
him, he could be very appealing.

‘Jhola’ is a Nepali film based on Krishna Dharawasi’s short story ‘Jhola’.
It depicts Nepali society about the Sati tradition that was in practice until
the 1920s. The 90-minute-film has beautifully presented the issues of
violence against women. “Has Nepalese society really passed through
such inhuman tradition?” is the question every youngster wonders about.
Garima has played a central role in the film. The plot develops with the
death of her husband in which she has to immolate herself upon her
husband’s death, especially on his funeral pyre. She is supposed to be
brunt alive with the dead body of her husband according to the tradition.
However, she escapes the fire and hides in a cave. The help of her son
fascinates the audience. Almost all the scenes seem realistic and historical.
Mr. Yadav Kumar Bhattarai, the director has filmed traditional tools like
‘dhiki’, ‘janto’, ‘madaani’ etc. which give traditional look in the film. Similarly,
‘ranko’, ‘diyalo’, and ‘country fireplace’, represent the ancient environment
to the spectators. Besides Sati tradition, the movie also touches Kamaara
Kamari (a kind of slavery) system. What beautiful cinematography!
Garima’s natural appearance, her role, and her acting are spellbinding
and add to the beauty of the movie.
