Summary

The poet and woman (may be his own mother) are in comfortable room. It is cold outside because it is Sunday evening in winter season. It is the woman who is playing on the piano singing songs near the poet. The poet has also become an adult person. When he hears the songs and listens to the piano; it takes him to past. The piano guides him to past. He thinks that he is very small baby sitting under the piano. The playing on the piano makes poet’s heartbeat. Now he doesn’t like to listen to the music but wants to be lost in his happy remembrance of his past.

Four Levels of Interpretation

Literal Comprehension

The poet and woman (may be his own mother) are in comfortable room. It is cold outside because it is Sunday evening in winter season. It is the woman who is playing on the piano singing songs near the poet. The poet has also become an adult person. When he hears the songs and listens to the piano; it takes him to past. The piano guides him to past. He thinks that he is very small baby sitting under the piano. The playing on the piano makes poet’s heartbeat. Now he doesn’t like to listen to the music but wants to be lost in his happy remembrance of his past.

Interpretation

The poet tries to show the effect of music composing this poem. He says that the music that he listened at present made him remember his past days sitting near his mother. He has remembrances of his childhood.

Critical Thinking

This is about poet’s personal feeling. Really charms of music make us emotional but nobody weeps like a baby when someone has become an adult.

Assimilation

As D.H. Lawrence felt in this poem, I also feel sad or happy if someone sings songs. Once I was attending a cultural show of our school Gokuleswar, tear rolled down from my eyes when one my friend sang a song about her miserable life.
